H.E. Dr. Joyce Banda Speaks At Wilson Center Program

Theme: Taking Action To Advance Women Leaders In Africa

On July 17, the Women in Public Service Project and Africa Program at the Wilson Center hosted a conversation with Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda, former President of Malawi and Wilson Center Distinguished Fellow, and civil society leaders on how to advance women’s leadership in Africa. Gwen K. Young, director of the Global Women’s Leadership Initiative and the Women in Public Service Project, moderated the conversation.

In her speech, Dr. Banda opined about identifying leadership in girls and encouraging families to educate the girls along with the boys.

She continued to say, “We need a toolkit to continue to fight for women’s participation in leadership because the continent of Africa has made good progress.”

Ms. Briggette Harrington, a SHEROES Foundation board member, was in attendance as support from the SHEROES organization.

The SHEROES Foundation is very proud of the tireless effort of Dr. Banda to empower girls and women. She has been at the forefront of the struggle for gender equality and women’s rights in Africa and in the world. The change in norms and beliefs is something that is much deeper and that requires all of us to be active. We continue to stand in solidarity with Dr. Banda and the Joyce Banda Foundation to continue to work towards the goal of increasing the number of women in leadership positions and economic empowerment. That, we believe, will ultimately benefit us all.
